Resolving Desktop Shortcuts Disappearing on Windows 7

Issue

Desktop shortcuts are being automatically removed. The shortcuts that are disappearing are from mapped network drives or UNC (\\servernaem\share) locations. Local content short cuts (something on the C: drive) are not disappearing.

(Possible) Problem Cause

The Windows System Maintenance Troubleshooter is starting too early, and is not “seeing” your mapped drives, or is running as a user who is not you, and can’t see your mapped drives. It then removes the mapped drives

Procedure

Click Start and Control Panel

Click Find and Fix Problems below System and Security

On the left hand side /pane, click Change Settings

Change the Computer Maintenance from On to Off, and then press OK

Now close the Control Panel window.
