Non-Genuine Toner? Good, Bad or YMMV?

I’ve been a “always use genuine toner” kind of guy for a long time – it’s pretty hard to go wrong with the toner than the manufacturer provides, albeit it makes the back pocket / purse lighter faster.

I’ve got an old Dell 3010cn sitting on my workbench, and it’s finally run out of toner (Cyan and Black).  I’ve grabbed two non-genuine toners online, for approximately 1/2 the price of the BLACK toner alone. So, about a 1/4 the price of a colour toner, yet, these are supposed to be the same thing?  I was Sceptical, at best. However, I’ve inserted the black, and done a test print – print quality the same (or better?) than before.  I’m dying to waste the last 20% of the cyan now, so that I can test what the quality will be like :).

What are your thoughts on non-genuine toners?  Supposedly, they’re not allowed to be refused by a printer in Australia, but have you seen them adversely affect a printer?  Is more cash in your pocket the only side effect of using these?
