SBS 2003 VSSAdmin list writers shows no writers

I had this issue when logging onto a client server today.  Potentially, this was triggered by multiple vss aware backups running at the same time – be VERY careful with your scheduling people :/.

The fix for me (cut and paste to a batch file):

@echo off
cls
echo.
echo This batch file will stop the vss service, and re-register all dlls.
echo.
echo To ensure that this functions showing all notifications, do not run
echo with the silent switch for regsvr32.
echo.
echo Press CTRL-C to quit or any other key to continue.
pause

net stop vss
regsvr32 ole32.dll
regsvr32 vss_ps.dll
Vssvc /Register
regsvr32 /i swprv.dll
regsvr32 /i eventcls.dll
regsvr32 es.dll
regsvr32 stdprov.dll
regsvr32 vssui.dll
regsvr32 msxml.dll
regsvr32 msxml3.dll
regsvr32 msxml4.dll
