Backups. You can NEVER have enough backups.

Filed under: Backups, General Paranoia — solutionsthroughit @ 15:19

When doing backups, you need to have at least two backup devices to ensure that you have a good backup strategy.  The rule of data protection, is that unless your data exists in two physically separate locations, it doesn’t exist.

Consider that when you backup to your external USB hard drive – you are connecting this to your computer, making it one physical device.  In the unlikely event that a power surge or lightning strike surges through to your computer, and ‘blowing it up’ – it will likely destroy the connected USB hard drive at the same time, destroying your ‘backup’ as well as the current data on the computer.

This is why you need to have a minimum of two devices – so that you have a minimum of two copies (computer + USB Disk) + USB disk at all times.
