Outlook Express PowerPoint Issue

Found this link with a fantastic fix for PowerPoint and Outlook Express.  Essentially, it looks like the file associations are getting fritzed.  MVPS has a link to a file that will fix this automatically (NOTE: untested for virus or functionality, however unlikely it is from this source).

The manual fix

  1. Click Start | Run and enter control folders and press OK.
  2. Select the Files tab, and scroll down to the PPS (Microsoft PowerPoint Slide Show) Entry
  3. Click Advanced, and then click the New button.
  4. In the section “Application used to perform action” enter the following, depending on your version of PowerPoint Viewer
    • PowerPoint 2003

      "C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\PowerPoint Viewer\pptview.exe" "%1"

    • PowerPoint 2007

      "C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\Office12\pptview.exe" "%1"

  5. Ensure that you UNCHECK the DDE tick box, and click OK twice.
  6. Close the folder options dialog box, and you should now be able to open PowerPoint files from Outlook Express.

Note: if you are experiencing this issue with PPT files, please rinse and repeat the above steps, with the PPT extension.
