Part Two: Preparing your webserver for wpad.dat files

The best place to put the wpad.dat file, is on a local web server, inside the network where you are hosting the proxy server.  As long as the file is accessible without the use of the proxy (i.e. having it on an external server, with non-proxied access blocked would be a bad thing).

I’ve chosen an IIS6 website, regardless of your chosen server, you will have to configure the MIME type for the wpad.dat file.  If you’re serving up other .dat files, I would suggest not using that server, or setting up a separate virtual site for this purpose.

In II6, open the properties for the site you have chosen to use, select the HTTP Headers tab, and press the MIME Types button.  Click the New Button and add the extension type of .dat with a MIME type of application/x-ns-proxy-autoconfig.

Restart the IISAdmin service, and you’re now ready for Part Three – configuring DHCP.
