Recovering Server’s Administrators Password

Having built up a server, and having some time elapse between putting it to one side, and then getting back to work on it, I neglected to document the password that was chosen for the one administrator account.  Didn’t have a managed services agent on it, couldn’t shut it down cleanly (its an *OLD* server) and was faced with having to re-install from scratch, as the password reset tool wouldn’t work due to the hard drive being "dirty" because it couldn’t be shutdown cleanly.

Quick workaround – boot to safe mode, and voila – shutdown menu is available from the ctrl+alt+del screen, allowing me to shut down cleanly, and then work the boot CD’s magic and clear the Administrators password.
